Navien E016: Heat Exchanger Overheating
Mid-shower the water goes from hot to nothing, and E016 shows on the display — a safety shutdown, not a random glitch. The heat exchanger got hotter than the control board is willing to allow, and it cut the burner rather than risk damage.
Applies to: Navien NPE, NCB, and NHB tankless and combi/condensing water heaters
What it means
Heat Exchanger Overheating — the heat exchanger reached an unsafe temperature. Because this is a safety cutoff rather than a component failure by itself, the unit is designed to recover once whatever restricted flow or air is cleared — but an exchanger that keeps tripping this code can eventually suffer real, lasting damage.
Most common causes
- Scale build-up from hard water
- Restricted or low water flow through the unit
- Clogged inlet filter
What you can safely check yourself
- Check for low water flow or a clogged inlet filter and clean per the owner's manual
- If the unit hasn't had an annual descaling flush, that maintenance is likely overdue
When to call a professional
You aren't comfortable performing a descaling flush yourself, or the overheating recurs after flushing.
Gas supply lines, gas control valves, and venting should only be worked on by a licensed plumber or HVAC technician. Mains/line-voltage electrical work should be done with the breaker off and, beyond a simple reset, by a qualified electrician or plumber.
What the fix costs
A descaling flush — the fix for most E016 cases tied to hard water — runs about $80–$200 if you hire it out, or close to free if you do it yourself with vinegar or a manufacturer-approved solution and an inexpensive pump (HomeGuide, manufacturer maintenance guides). If the heat exchanger itself has been damaged by repeated overheating, parts and labor can climb high enough that comparing the repair quote against a new unit — roughly $1,500–$3,500 installed for a mid-range gas tankless model (Angi, HomeAdvisor) — is worth doing before committing.
