Rheem 1L: Scale Build-Up Warning
Rheem's 1L code isn't an emergency — it's the control board nagging you that the heat exchanger has enough mineral scale built up that it's worth flushing soon, before it turns into a bigger problem.
Applies to: Rheem/Ruud tankless gas water heaters
What it means
The control board has detected lime/scale build-up in the heat exchanger and is flagging that a descaling flush is needed to prevent permanent damage. Unlike a flame or ignition fault, 1L is a maintenance warning: the unit keeps heating water normally while it's displayed, which is exactly why it's easy to ignore for months until the scale build-up starts affecting performance or, eventually, damages the heat exchanger outright.
Most common causes
- Hard water without a softener
- Missed annual descaling flush maintenance
What you can safely check yourself
The fix here is maintenance, not repair:
- Perform a vinegar flush through the unit's isolation/service valves following the owner's manual (a Rheem tankless flush kit with a small utility pump makes this easier)
- After flushing, follow the manual's reset procedure to clear the code
When to call a professional
You don't have isolation valves installed, aren't comfortable draining/flushing the unit, or the code returns quickly after flushing.
Gas supply lines, gas control valves, and venting should only be worked on by a licensed plumber or HVAC technician. Mains/line-voltage electrical work should be done with the breaker off and, beyond a simple reset, by a qualified electrician or plumber.
What the fix costs
Doing the descaling flush yourself costs next to nothing beyond a jug of white vinegar and, if you don't already own one, a small utility pump — a Rheem-branded flush kit runs roughly $40–$80. Hiring it out is usually $80–$200 for a standard tankless descaling service, per Angi's and HomeGuide's maintenance pricing guides. Either way it's far cheaper than what unaddressed hard-water scale eventually does to a heat exchanger.
