Rinnai 61: Combustion Fan Failure
Code 61 points at one specific part: the combustion fan that pulls air through the burner and pushes exhaust back out — and on this fault, there's very little a homeowner can safely do beyond a visual check.
Applies to: Rinnai tankless and condensing water heaters.
What it means
Combustion Fan Failure — the fan isn't turning freely or the motor circuit shows a fault. The control board monitors the fan's speed and circuit; when either falls outside the expected range, it assumes the fan can't reliably move combustion air and stops the unit rather than run without confirmed airflow.
Most common causes
Three things typically cause it:
- Debris or obstruction preventing the fan from turning freely
- Damaged or loose wiring harness to the fan motor
- Worn or failed fan motor
What you can safely check yourself
This is one of the more limited codes for homeowner troubleshooting:
- With power off, you can visually check that the vent terminal and any accessible fan opening are free of obstructions
- Do not open the unit's cabinet or handle internal wiring yourself
When to call a professional
Always — diagnosing and replacing a fan motor involves opening the cabinet and testing electrical components, which should be done by a licensed technician.
Opening the cabinet and testing or replacing fan wiring is line-voltage electrical work — leave it to a qualified technician.
What the fix costs
A failing combustion fan is a parts-and-labor repair, not a quick fix: replacement fan/blower motors typically run $200–$500 installed once the diagnostic visit is included (Angi, HomeGuide contractor rate data). If the unit is older and other components are also showing wear, it's worth asking the technician whether a fan replacement or a full unit swap — commonly $1,500–$3,500 installed — makes more financial sense at that point.
